How many consonants do we have in the English alphabet? What sounds do they make? Let’s find out. 

 

What’s up guys? My name is Shane and this is part 2 of the pronunciation practice series. If you haven’t seen part 1, you can watch it here or here. Today we are talking about the consonants.

 

If you remember from last time, we have 26 letters in the alphabet.  5 vowels and 21 consonants.  Today we look at the first 11 consonants. And make sure you watch until the very end of the video because we have a quiz to test your understanding. Okay, let’s get started! 

 

The first thing we need to do today is look at the names of each consonant. So I will say the name of the consonant and then you say it after me. B. b. c. c. d. d. f. f. g. g. h. h. j. j. k. k. l. l. m. m. n. n.

 

Now we know the names of the consonants so we now we need to look at what sounds they make. So I will say the name of the consonant, the sound the consonant makes and then an example. 

 

This letter is called b.  the sound it makes it b.  b. an example word is bee. Bee.

 

This letter is called c. the sound it makes it c. c. an example word is cat. Cat.

 

This letter is called d. the sound it makes is d. d. an example word is dog. Dog.

 

The next letter is f. the sound it makes is f. f. an example word is fire. Fire.

 

The name of this letter is g. the sound it makes is g. g. an example word is goat. Goat.

 

This letter’s name is h. h. the sound it makes is h. h. an example word is hamburger. Hamburger.

 

This letter is called j. the sound it makes it j. j. an example word is jar. 

 

This letter is called k. the sound it makes is k. an example word is kite. Kite.

 

This letter is called l. the sound it makes is l. l. with this one, make sure your tongue is up. L. l. an example word is leaf. Leaf. Make sure your tongue is up. Leaf.

 

This letter is called m. the sound it makes is m. m. an example word is monkey. Monkey.

 

This letter is called n. n. The sound it makes is n. n. an example word is nest. Nest.

 

Now we know the first 11 consonants, let’s check to see if you can remember them all.  I will show you a letter and you can say the name of the letter and the sound the letter makes. Let’s have a look at the first one. 

 

The name is c. and it makes a c sound. 

 

What about this one? The name is d. and it makes a d sound.

 

What about this one? The name is n. and it makes a n sound.

 

What about this one? The name is f and it makes a f sound.

 

What about this one? The name is l and it makes a l sound.

 

What about this one? The name is g and it makes a g sound.

 

What about this one?  The name is j and it makes a j sound.
