The past simple tense is a tense we use in English to talk about things that happened in the past, before now.

Why do I use the past simple tense?

We use the past simple to talk about:

  1. something that happened one time in the past;
  2. something that happened a few times/many times in the past; and
  3. something that happened for a certain time period in the past (which is finished now).

1. Something that happened one time in the past.

How do I make past tense verbs (verb 2)?

Past tense verbs are normally made by adding ‘ed’ at the end of a verb.  These are called regular verbs.

Examples:
Listen (present) / listened (past tense)
Walk (present) / walked (past tense)
Happen (present) / happened (past tense)

With some verbs, we don’t add ‘ed’.  These verbs are called irregular verbs.

Examples:

Break (present) / broke (past tense)
Speak (present) / spoken (past tense)
