What are capital letters?
A capital letter (or uppercase letter) is a form of a letter which is normally bigger than the lowercase letter.
Examples:
C (capital letter) / c (lowercase letter)
F (capital letter) / f (lowercase letter)
M (capital letter) / m (lowercase letter)
The capital letters are in red and the lowercase letters are in black in the picture below.

When should I use capital letters?
1. At the start of a sentence
Capital letters should be used at the start of sentences.
Examples:
He is going to the shop.
That’s the movie I watched last night.
What time does the next bus leave?
2. Names / proper nouns
Capital letters should be used when using someone’s name or talking about the name of a thing or place. These are generally called proper nouns.
Examples:
Australia
John
Murdoch University
Star Wars
3. Abbreviations
Examples:
ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
GPS (Global Positioning System)
USA (The United States of America)
