What is the best way to learn English? Is it speaking, reading, listening? Well today I give you the answer.
What’s up guys? My name is Shane and today we are talking about the best way to learn English. Learning English isn’t hard if you learn the right way. You can’t learn English in a day, or in a week or in a month. But with consistent study, and studying in the right way, you can become fluent.
Some people say that speaking is the best way to learn English. Some people say that listening is the best way. And some people say that reading is the best way. Today I talk about the pros and the cons, the good things and the bad things of each method. And make sure you watch until the end of the video because I will tell you the best way to learn English. Okay, let’s get stated!
Many people say that speaking is the best way to learn English. If you just speak to native speakers, you will become fluent. If you’re always talking to native speakers, you will become fluent.
And speaking is a good way to learn English but there are also some cons aswell. So let’s have a look at the pros first.
One of the biggest pros of learning English through speaking is that when you speak a lot, your mouth will become used to speaking English. It will become very easy for you to speak English. And that’s what you want. When you speak English, you don’t want to have to think about it. You just want the language to come out of your mouth automatically.
And the second pro is that speaking English can improve your confidence. Many students say that when they’re learning a language, they don’t feel confident to speak to native speakers and that they are not ready to speak to native speakers but a lot of the times, people learning English will never feel ready.
So one of the best ways to improve your confidence is to just speak to native speakers. You might feel nervous but you won’t die. You will get better and better. You will feel more confident and confident the more you speak to native speakers.
And the third pro is that speaking allows you to use the language for what it was designed for. English is a language. We have languages so that we can speak to each other. So if you’re learning English through speaking, you’re using the language for what it was designed for.
And the fourth pro is that its fun! It’s fun speaking to native speakers. You can exchange stories, messages, information, make friends, you can learn things. This is realty really fun and if you find it fun, you will probably keep doing it. But if it’s boring to you, you probably won’t do it consistently.
Now let’s look at the cons. One of the biggest cons of learning English just through speaking is that just because you are speaking, doesn’t mean you are saying it correctly.
If you’re not getting feedback. If you’re not listening to native speakers and copying them, you might be saying things wrong. And then you will get into a bad habit of speaking incorrectly. And you don’t want to speak incorrectly.
You want to be speaking English correctly from the start.
And the second con is you might be saying the same thing again and again and again and not learning new things. A lot of the time when we are learning a language, we learn something and then we just keep saying it again and again and again and we don’t learn any other ways to express ourselves.
And that’s very important. If you want to speak English like a native speaker, you must know many ways to express yourself in many different situations.
And the next con is if you’re speaking to a native speaker and he says a word you don’t understand, you might feel a little bit embarrassed that you don’t understand the word.
And when we are speaking, speaking is very fast. So if someone says a new word to you that you don’t understand, you probably won’t have time to open your dictionary and look up what the word means.
And sometimes this is a problem because if you don’t understand one word, you might not understand the whole sentence. And many English learners feel shy to say that they don’t understand and that they don’t know the word.
But guys, if you don’t understand, or if you don’t know a word, tell the native speaker. They will be happy to help you.
Okay now let’s look at listening. Let’s have a look at some of the pros of listening. One of the biggest pros of learning English through listening is you can hear how native speakers really speak.
For example, let’s have a look at this sentence. Most non native speakers will say what are you doing? But a native speaker will say: woddayuhdowing? woddayuhdowing? Woddayuh, woddayuh, woddayuh, woddayuhdowing?
And the next pro is when you listen to English a lot, you can learn a lot of new vocabulary because you see the way that native speakers actually speak to each other. You see the phrases they use, the words they use.
And if you watch native speakers in many many different situations, you will learn many useful phrase. And when you start copying the native speakers, that’s when you will really start to sound like a native speaker yourself.
And the third pro is similar to the last one. You can learn new grammar structures. When you’re listening to native speakers you might hear them use different grammar structures. For example: he is as tall as her. This is a common grammar structure. As … as.
And the last pro is you can hear connected speech. One of the best ways to sound like a native English speaker is to practice your connected speech. Connected speech is when native speakers speak really quickly, a lot of the words join together.
Do you remember that example I showed you before? What are you doing? This is an example of connected speech. Native speakers will say woddayuhdowing? woddayuhdowing? All the words join together and if you listen to native speakers enough and then copy them, you can improve your connected speech.
Now let’s talk about the cons. One of the biggest cons of learning English through listening is just because you can listen, just because you can understand, doesn’t mean you know how to speak.
Maybe you can understand 80% of what you hear. But when you go and speak to a native speaker, you might not be able to speak as well as you can hear.
And when you’re learning language, it’s important to know how to listen and to know how to speak.
And another con of learning English through listening is sometimes it might be boring. If you’re just listening, listening, listening, maybe it might be a little bit boring because you’re not interacting, you’re not speaking to anyone, you’re just sitting there listening.
Now, let’s talk a little bit about reading. One of the biggest pros of learning English through reading is that you can learn a lot of new vocabulary and grammar structures. When you’re reading, you can see the words written down, and the grammar structures written down. And if you read them, enough, if you see them enough, you will remember them.
Another pro of learning through reading is that you can take your time. When you’re reading a book, or an article or a magazine, you don’t have to rush. You’re not speaking to anyone, you are just reading so if you don’t know a word, you can stop and look it up in the dictionary or you can ask your teacher or you can look online for the meaning.
So this is one of the best things about reading – you can take your time, there is no pressure.
One of the biggest cons of learning through reading is that sometimes reading might be too hard. Because most English texts are designed for native speakers and if you’re not at that level yet, when you’re reading a text, it might be too hard for you and this might make you feel frustrated and not want to learn anymore.
Another con which is similar to the last con is that sometimes it might be hard to find a text that is suitable for your level. A lot of times in English, there are either texts for native speakers or for beginners.
It’s very hard to find texts in English that are for intermediate learners. And if you can’t find a text that is suitable for you, this might also cause you to feel a little bit frustrated.
And the last con is: sometimes it might be hard to find a text at your level that you’re interested in. Maybe you found a text that is your level but you’re not interested in it. And a lot the time, when we are not interested in something, we won’t give it our full effort.
Best method for learning English
So what is the best method for learning English? Are you ready for the answer?
The best method for learning English is all three.
You should be speaking, you should be listening and you should be reading English.
Because like we talked about, speaking has cons, reading has cons and listening has cons. None of these methods, by themselves, is perfect.
And in life, a lot of the time, nothing is perfect. You have to take things from many different places to make something that is perfect.
So take the good things from speaking, the good things from reading and the good things from listening and this is how you should be learning English.
You should be doing all three. Because it’s very important you know how to speak English, listen to English and to read English.
If you’re just good at speaking, this will be a problem when you’re listening and when you’re reading. So you must practice all three things.
And if you’re not reading a lot, if you’re not speaking a lot, if you’re not listening a lot, when will you start? You should start right now, today. If not today, when will you start?
