What is punctuation?
Punctuation means the symbols and signs that we use when writing English. These symbols are normally used to help give meaning to a sentence and can also be used instead of words.
Each symbol is normally called a ‘punctuation mark.’
What are the most common punctuation marks?
Symbol: .
Name: full stop
Use: to show the end of a sentence
Example: I went to the beach.
Symbol: ,
Name: comma
Use: to show a slight stop in a sentence or to separate items in a list
Example: He likes basketball, soccer and golf.
Symbol: ?
Name: question mark
Use: to show that a sentence is a question
Example: Are you going out today?
Symbol: !
Name: exclamation mark
Use: to show surprise, excitement, anger and other emotions
Symbol: :
Name: colon
Use: to show the start of a list
Example: There are three levels of English: beginner, intermediate and advanced.
Symbol: ”
Name: quotation marks
Use: to show that something written came from somebody else
Example: He said, “I’m going out later.”
Symbol: /
Name: forward slash
Use: to show or, to show abbreviations
Example: Someone dropped his/her wallet.
