7 Tips For Better Writing

Don’t translate.  Translating sentences from your language to English will probably cause your writing to be wrong for two reasons.  First, the grammar may be wrong in English.  Second, the sentence may sound weird or unnatural as it may be something that native English speakers would not say or write.

Know your weaknesses.  Find out what your problems areas are in English and then fix them.  If you have a problem with using adjectives, learn about adjectives.  If you don’t understand how to use present simple grammar, learn present simple grammar.

Read a lot.  Reading is one of the best ways to learn how to write correctly.  Reading a lot will help you to see correct patters in English.

Check your writing for errors.  Even native speakers make errors when writing – it is normal.  If you want to avoid having errors in your writing, read your work after you have written it.

Think about who you are writing to.  If you’re writing to your boss at work, your writing should be formal.  If you are writing to your friend with a text message, it can be informal writing.

Keep it simple.  The writing which is easiest to understand normally has short sentences.  Writing short sentences is no problem but when you have two very short sentences, you may be able to join them together with conjunctions like ‘but’ or ‘and.’

Think of ideas first, write second.  Sometimes you may not know what to write.  If you are writing a longer piece of writing like a university essay, it may be best to write down all of your ideas first.  After you have your ideas ready, then you can use those ideas to start writing.
